Introduction to Handbag Design
August 15-19, 10:00-16:00
This one week course provides the opportunity to learn about the handbag design process - from sketching out your ideas, to choosing materials, to designing a range of bags and finally producing your own handbag block.

This is an excellent opportunity to use your ideas and skills under the tutoring of Ann Saunders, who has extensive experience in the fashion industry. As design co-ordinator for Laura Ashley she specialised in accessories and was also responsible for styling, arranging shoots, staging fashion shows and the mail order catalogue. Anne is also a visiting lecturer at the London College of Fashion and runs her own accessories company.

Introduction to Designing Shoes
August 22-26, 10:00-16:00
We all love shoes- but where do all those fabulous styles come from?
This introductory course takes you through the fascinating history of footwear from the bejewelled pumps of Elizabeth I to the bejewelled pumps of Jimmy Choo.

We will look at how shoes are made and learn how to design and illustrate our own ideas. The course ends with a practical design exercise following the stages taken by professional designers to produce a range of shoes. This will include illustrations and 3D mock-ups. Lead by Chris Hill who has been designing shoes for over twenty years, some of her students are now household names – Jimmy Choo, Emma Hope and Patrick Cox.

Wedding Bell Swoon

If you know me at all, you know I am addicted to wedding blogs. From my hours spent clicking through pages of 5-tiered wedding cakes and embossed invitations, I already know I want peony and hydrangea bouquets, 3 bridesmaids in tea length dresses, and Veuve Clicquot champagne served in crystal flutes at my reception. Dream big right? And yes, I might be a tad ahead of myself. But one thing I have not nailed down is the wedding dress. Oh and Mr. Right…

This week our featured designer is Freeload Accessories. The creation of London designer Debbie MacPherson, is a line of fine leather bags and accessories. Everything is crafted with love in East London out of supple Italian leather.

The Shop@FTM is the only boutique where you can purchase these luxurious leather goods.

I have been gushing over the brand new i-Pad case (although I have no i-Pad, hint hint), and have seriously dreamt about the Carly Luxury Shopper bag in camel (another hint…when’s my birthday again?).

Excuse me Sir Elton John, but who designed that dashing suit?! Tommy Nutter of course!

The black and white jacket, trousers, and bow tie were a key look in his 1984 “I’m Still Standing Tour.” And he could not have looked more dapper. Nutter produced a whole iconic wardrobe of suits for Sir John’s tour. Check out Elton sporting Tommy Nutter’s two-toned masterpiece singing one of my favorites “Bennie and the Jets” live at Wembley Arena.

Tommy Nutter must have gone mad for plaid when desining this ensemble. But I beleive this quirky get-up would be the talk of London Town in 1975.

Wouldn't the patchwork colors and patterns on the vest look charming with a light blue oxford shirt, navy trousers, and brown loafers? Helloooo handsome! Even with two complex patterns on the jacket, the neutral colors make it a staple in any stylish gentlemen's fall wardrobe.

Hello hello! I’m Landis, the new social media intern for the Fashion and Textile Museum. There’s a lot happening here at the FTM and we need some help getting the word out.

I’m a southern girl from the University of Georgia (in a land far far away -- actually only 8 miserable hours on a plane) itching to get my hands dirty in the marketing and fashion industries.

I just started with the FTM, and I am excited to help expand their use of social media to alert more people about what the FTM offers. Of course I don’t exactly know where to start and need your help. Most importantly, visit the Fashion and Textile Museum if you have any interest in fashion, textiles or jewellery!

We’ll be utilizing Facebook, Twitter, and maybe a couple of blogs – but be sure to send me your ideas. Mind the gap y’all, I’m about to blow up your newsfeed.

I may not be a city girl, but boy do I love fashion -- anything and everything about it. The FTM is the perfect place to take a peek into contemporary fashion exhibits, learn more about the fashion industry by taking a FTM-sponsored workshop, or shop the FTM store for collections from up and coming designers. There’s even a great little restaurant (The Teapod) serving up a vibrant menu of goodies throughout the day. You should taste their quiches, they are always sooo good Have I mentioned I love working here yet?

The FTM is located in the coolest building right in the middle of fashionable Bermondsey Village. The building was designed by Ricardo Legorreta and is painted pink, orange, and blue – capturing the flavour of the area.

FTM joins in London 2010 Open Weekend with Happening Hankies

Beautiful summer dresses and glamorous evening wear were specialities of Horrockses Fashions Limited, manufacturer of one of the most respected ready-to-wear labels of the 1940s and 1950s.

The company is best known for its full-skirted dresses that were sought after by women everywhere and were even worn by Queen Elizabeth II.

The exhibition opens on 9th July and runs until 24th October at the Fashion and Textile Museum.

Rebekah works extensively with cutting edge designers, including William Tempest, Stefán Orschel-Read and Jasper Garvida ad styles several shows each London Fashion Week. She is also well known for her blog Stylist Stuff and writes regularly for Drapers Online. She is unique stylist because of her ability to communicate ideas, collaborate on any kind of project and incorporate a wide variety of influences.

Leon Bailey Green will be presenting top tips for e-commerce

With years of experience crossing digital media, marketing, fashion and retail, Leon has been a consultant to numerous companies operating in the online fashion sector. He has assisted online fashion businesses with marketing, content, buying and recruitment strategies, as well as overall business analyses. As a blogger Leon has been published on Drapers Online and contributed to Econsultancy, NMK and Enterprise Nation. Leon produced Online Fashion 100, which was published online by The Independent earlier this year, to celebrate the main players in the sector who have helped the industry to grow. He judged the online fashion industry's very first etail awards, has chaired events for the London Fashion Network and sat on the panel for the Let Them Eat Cake's bloggers talk. Participants should bring along a photograph and if possible a sketch plan of a room they want to decorate.

About the facilitator: Daniel Hopwood is a well known interior designer, workig internationally on both residential and commercial projects notable for their high level of bespoke luxury. He will also be familiar as the presenter of Channel 4's interior design show 'Britain's Best Homes'.

Fiona Howard has created some very well known textile designs including the incredibly popular Sanderson print 'Dandelion Clocks'.

This is a great opportunity to spend the day here at the Fashion and Textile Museum in the company of one of the UK's foremost textile designers, who will guide you through the key techniques that will help you produce your own special print.

Fiona will take participants through the process from research and demonstration to then drawing your own design, tracing it onto lino and then cutting and printing it. There is also the opportunity for the design you make to be printed onto Sanderson fabric and made up into a cushion cover.

We Are Photogirls - Two Day Fashion Photography Workshop for Teenagers

The Fashion and Textile Museum are still looking for young accessory designers for the new competition ‘Young Accessory Designer of the Year’ that they have launched in partnership with Clothes Show London, at

Earls Court

25-27 June 2010.

Continuing Clothes Show London’s commitment to nurturing and developing young talent in the creative arts, they are organising a competition to find the Young Accessory Designer of the Year in partnership with The Fashion and Textile Museum (FTM). The competition is open to aspiring designers who have been trading for fewer than three years, providing a platform for young designers and their businesses in this highly competitive industry.

The prestigious new award in partnership with the FTM, challenges designers to create an accessory product that encompasses the FTM’s brand values and is suitable for sale in the FTM’s shop (Shop@FTM) and the FTM’s online boutique. The winner will also receive the once-in-a-lifetime chance to receive six months business support with industry advisors to help set up and develop their business and make it sustainable. Their winning design will be displayed at Clothes Show London and may go on to be launched and sold in the Shop@FTM. In addition, the victor will be invited to the Private View of the forthcoming Horrockses Fashions: Off the Peg style of the 40’s and 50’s exhibition and will be offered a place on FTM’s professional CAD short course.

All entries will be judged by FTM’s Commercial Director, Alison Lewy and Managing Director of Clothes Show London, Gavin Brown. The winner will be announced at an impressive awards ceremony in Clothes Show London’s spectacular Fashion Theatre at London’s

New exhibition open at the Fashion and Textile Museum

‘30 Years of Pineapple by Debbie Moore’

The Fashion and Textile Museum are pleased to announce the opening of ‘30 Years of Pineapple by Debbie Moore’, a retrospective exhibition that runs until 24^th February 2010.

‘30 Years of Pineapple’ celebrates the success of the brand and its influence on fashion over the last thirty years. The exhibition features key looks created by Debbie Moore for the Pineapple label include the Body, the legging, cotton lycra dresses and the Boyfriend sweatshirt.

The ‘30 Years of Pineapple’ exhibition is free and is hosted by the Fashion and Textile Museum, until 24^th February 2010. Exhibition opening times are Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 6pm with last admission at 5.15pm.

Editors Notes

Debbie Moore, a famous model of the 60s, founded Pineapple Dance Studios in 1979 in London’s Covent Garden. Recognising a need for an accessible, affordable dance space, Moore soon found herself with a highly successful business. Moore also noticed another gap in the market. Dancewear available at the time was Nylon Lycra and shiny performance wear. The dancers themselves were looking for something more comfortable and fluid; customised tights from school uniforms were a common sight. With this in mind, Moore approached DuPont in 1979 to develop a fabric that would change the way people dressed: cotton Lycra.

Pineapple’s dancewear in the newly developed fabric was an instant hit. The range quickly expanded as Moore continued to innovate in the collection. Her fresh approach and intuitive sense of what women wanted to wear led Pineapple from strength to strength. A New York branch of the Studios opened in 1982, further increasing the influence of the Pineapple aesthetic.

Among the looks created by Debbie Moore for the Pineapple label include the Body (pre-Donna Karan), the legging and the Boyfriend sweatshirt. She also designed the first range of cotton Lycra dresses; simple fitted shapes in a fitted, easy-to-wear fabric that were unlike anything available to consumers at the time. The result was electric, influencing the fashion industry across the board. All of these designs have helped define the styles of their respective decades.

Pineapple has continued to expand and is now recognised for its influence on fashion of the last thirty years. Debbie Moore’s career has been long and successful, inspiring many women in business along the way. She re-created the original Pineapple styles with on-line retail phenomenon ASOS, introducing a new generation to this innovative, and historically definitive, company.

Our popular knitting club returns for the new year, this year with separate courses for beginners and more advanced knitters.

Beginners course - Tuesday evenings from 19th January

This new club at the FTM is aimed at those who have little or no knitting experience but who have always wanted to learn the lovely art of knitting. Taught in a relaxed environment you will learn the basic techniques and stitches required to knit. Once you have mastered the basics you will put them into practice on a class project which will mean you have a finished article at the end of the course.

Intermediate course - Wednesday evenings from 20th January

This course is ideal for those who have mastered basic knitting techniques and want to take their skills to the next level. Over the course of six weeks you will learn how to read and interpret basic commercial patterns through to creating your own simple designs, in a friendly and informal environment.

Both courses take place one evening a week for six weeks from 6.30 - 9pm. Needles and yarns are supplied for use in the first class. Participants will need to acquire their own needles and yarns for the following classes and projects.

Ceramics masterclass with Sally Tuffin

Very Sanderson: 150 years of English decoration - New exhibition at the FTM 19th March – 13th June 2010

The Fashion and Textile Museum is pleased to announce details of its collaboration with Sanderson - one of the world’s most innovative and pioneering fabrics and furnishings companies - as it celebrates its 150^th anniversary in 2010.

The work of this most quintessentially English company will be showcased in a new exhibition which runs from 19^th March – 13^thJune 2010 and will take visitors on a tour de force of 150 years of English decoration.

When Arthur Sanderson set up his business in 1860 as an importer of French wallpapers he could scarcely have imagined that a century later it would have grown into a company with a landmark London showroom serving an international market. One hundred and fifty years since it started Sanderson is still going strong today.

However, the exhibition charts not just the Sanderson story, but the social history of a country reflected through domestic furnishings and the changing social mores of society.

For example, Sanderson was a beneficiary of the building boom in Britain in the 1880s that led to greater demand for affordable wallpaper and the company was quick to take advantage of this by expanding its range of machine-printed papers. Adapting to new trends has been a key theme throughout Sanderson’s history and is central to its longevity, as is its expansion into printed textiles and other decorative items.

During its illustrious history the company has amassed a vast collection of wallpapers and textiles representing the many changing faces and fads of interior decoration. Its archive incorporates examples by A W M Pugin, Charles Eastlake, William Morris and many other designers whose tastes influenced generations.

Sanderson itself bought, commissioned and produced products by key figures whose names read like a who’s who of the art and design world: from Christopher Dresser, the Silver Studio and C F A Voysey in the early years, to postwar artists and designers such as Pat Albeck, Lucienne Day, Pablo Picasso and John Piper. Examples of their work will be shown as part of this new exhibition which is full of surprises, to fascinate and inform those whose tastes run from the Arts & Crafts style, jazzy Moderne, fifties' Festival designs and Pop patterns, to decidedly contemporary art and décor.

Renowned textile writer and academic Mary Schoeser, who has curated the exhibition, said ‘Even those who think they know the Sanderson story will be surprised to find just how great the company’s contribution was, not only in matters of design, but by being in the forefront of technological developments. They were even among the first, nearly a century ago, to produce booklets with colour plates illustrating their paints, papers and fabrics.’

The exhibition is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated book published by Thames & Hudson and a series of talks and events will also take place.

Our new Adobe InDesign Desktop Publishing course introduces this new software and will give you the skills to create high quality flyers, brochures, stationery and other promotional material for your business.

Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
Our courses have been developed to meet the specific needs of designers working in the fashion, textiles and jewellery sectors. Training in these Adobe applications is delivered in small groups with a focus on your particular learning requirements. Courses are available to help introduce you to these programs or to help build up your confidence and skills to a more advanced level.

All courses incorporate 15 hours tuition. Evening courses run for 6 weeks (6.30pm - 9pm). Weekend courses run for 4 weeks (10am - 2.15pm) with a 30 minute break. Intensive courses run over three consecutive days. Click on the information link next to each listing for full details.

Twist Baby Twist - a psychedelic evening of laughter and fun!

The much anticipated night ‘Twist Baby Twist’ was a riotous success last Friday at the Fashion and Textile Museum. A celebration of the psychedelic sixties, ‘Twist Baby Twist’ was inspired by its location - the acclaimed exhibition ‘Foale and Tuffin – Made in England’, which charts the phenomenal impact Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin had upon London fashion in the 1960’s and their part in the youthquake movement.

First stop was the hair and make-up team, who transformed twenty-first century girls and boys into sixties icons. Next, a rail of vintage clothes and accessories formed the perfect sixties dressing up box. A quick pout in the ‘David Bailey Photo Booth’ and the night was ready to get underway.

With daisy chains adorning every head, hosts The Supreme Sisters belting out such classics as ‘Stop! In the Name of Love’ and live music from Bebe & Paulo, Remi Nicole and Theoretical Girl and The Equations, ‘Twist Baby Twist’ was a fun filled evening of grooving on down!

A lively catwalk presentation from Pop Boutique Fashion Shows was the cherry on top of an evening of laughter and fun. Be sure to check out the fantastic Foale and Tuffin Exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum to have some sixties nostalgia of your own.

Jacqueline Groag at the Fashion and Textile Museum

Jacqueline Groag was probably the most influential textile designer in Britain in the post WWII era and the FTM is pleased to be showcasing a small selection of her work from October until December 2009.

Originally Czech, Groag studied textile and pattern design in Austria and during the late twenties and early thirties designed textiles for the Wiener Werkstatte in Vienna. However, she and her husband were forced to flee to London in 1939 by the political situation in Europe. This didn’t stop her work and throughout the forties she was the leading designer of textiles in Britain and much of the contemporary style of the textiles and wallpapers shown at the 1951 Festival of Britain were heavily indebted to her influential designs of the previous decade.

Her work and influence included large corporations and exclusive couturiers but was familiar to the general public through stores and companies such as John Lewis, Liberty of London, David Whitehead, Edinburgh Weavers, Sandersons, Warerite and Formica.

Jacqueline Groag died in London in 1986 at the age of 83 and this small but insightful display provides a glimpse into the work of someone who was incredibly influential in shaping post-war design and is accompanied by a book Jacqueline Groag, Textile & Pattern Design; Wiener Werkstatte to American Modern. There will be a booking signing by the authors on Thursday 29th October.

Today – ‘Foale and Tuffin – Made in England’ is open!

Last night saw a fantastic crowd at the Fashion and Textile Museum for the official opening of the FTM’s newest exhibition ‘Foale and Tuffin – Made in England’.

With the spirit of the swinging 60s in the air, guests were thrilled to see the exhibition officially opened by Sir Paul Smith who, with lighthearted prompts from Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin, recounted his awe as a young man from Nottingham, meeting the two talented designers for the first time at their boutique in Marlborough Court where his “girlfriend from London” Pauline, now his wife, was then working. “[Foale and Tuffin] were such pioneers. It was so revolutionary what they were doing” praised Smith.

There was much admiration for the inspired layout of the new exhibition, which recreates both the Foale and Tuffin boutique and their original workroom, right down to their original rolls of fabric. On the ground floor, a signature red and blue Foale and Tuffin sign illuminates the way for rails of fun and flirty dresses in bright pop colours, whilst upstairs old workbenches boast swatches, buttons, sketches and magazine cards charting their success.

To the right on the top floor, we are brought back to the present day with Marion Foale’s stunning, on-trend hand knitted garments, hats and scarves and Sally Tuffin’s striking hand thrown vases. Guests were thrilled to find many of these items also available to purchase in the popular Shop@FTM which did a roaring trade all evening.

Today, Friday 23rd October, the exhibition opens to the public – head down and get inspired!

New retrospective exhibition of Sixties design duo at the FTM -

From October 2009 the Fashion and Textile Museum is staging a retrospective exhibition of Foale and Tuffin – two influential designers who were at the heart of the cultural explosion in London in the Sixties.

Many things have been written about fashion in London in the Sixties but one of the most overlooked stories it that of Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin, part of London’s ‘Youthquake’.

The Foale and Tuffin label was what cool girls wore – colourful, pop-inspired mini-dresses and trend-setting trouser suits were just some of the key pieces that were ahead of their time in developing popular, desirable fashion.

After meeting at Walthamstow Art School in 1955 and then studying together at the Royal College of Art, they embarked on a lifelong friendship and a trailblazing career. Their boutique off Carnaby Street was at the epicentre of the new fashion scene and these two friends reigned supreme as the queens of cool, wearable fashion from 1962 until 1972.

Foale and Tuffin – Made in England will present a vibrant and inspiring representation of two key British fashion designers of the 1960s and the part they played in creating the changing London scene. It will revisit the Sixties vibe by recreating their boutique, showroom and design studio and chart the very personal story of two women who set up on their own with just a lot of courage and £200 pounds in their pockets!

Surrounded by a throng of creative friends throughout their career Foale and Tuffin successfully tapped into the mood of the moment and were at the forefront of ideas – it is easy to forget that once it was unusual for women to wear trousers but the trouser suit became one of their key pieces and changed the way women dress forever.

Their talent and success is modestly summed up by Sally Tuffin - ‘We made our own clothes and we realised that there was a gap. So it was very much that people would make their own clothes, people would dress themselves and style themselves with bits and pieces, and that was what was happening then and we just sort of jumped in and made the bits and pieces for them’.

Both are still great friends and very much involved in the design world – Marion Foale has a successful knitwear business and Sally Tuffin’s pottery is sought after by collectors around the world.
