Designing Shoes and Handbags – week long courses this August


Our expert tutors will show you how to design shoes or handbags in these fantastic value 5 day summer courses.

Introduction to handbag design

Monday 16th – Friday 20th August, 10am – 4pm

Show us a woman who doesn’t like her handbags and we’ll eat our handbag!

Learn about the design process, from sketching out your ideas to choosing materials, creating your own design and producing bags. Tutor Ann Saunders used to be design coordinator for Laura Ashley and is now a visiting lecturer at the London College of Fashion, as well as running her own accessories company.

Designing Shoes

Monday 23rd to Friday 27th August, 10am – 4pm

This introductory course takes you through the fascinating history of footwear from the bejewelled pumps of Elizabeth I to the bejewelled pumps of Jimmy Choo.

We will look at how shoes are made and learn to design and illustrate our own ideas. The course ends with a practical exercise following the stages taken by professional designers to produce a range of shoes. This will include illustrations and 3D mock-ups. Led by Chris Hill who has been designing shoes for over twenty years, some of her students are now household names – Jimmy Choo, Emma Hope and Patrick Cox.

Textile Design Workshop

Saturday 29th May 2010 10am - 4pm

Be inspired by Sanderson textile and create a design to decorate your own beautiful fabric, which can be made into a scarf, cushion or bag

With workshop leader Clare Sly, you will look at different design layouts, patterns, textures, techiques and use of colour to create something unique and wonderful. you will have the option of hand painting, machine embroidery, hand stitching and embellishing.

Materials will be provided but please bring along any bits and bobs that you feel may be useful for this project and that will be interesting if you want to embellish your design.

Customise your own pashmina!

Workshop - Saturday 22nd May 2010, 2pm - 5pm

Create your own unique customised pashmina with help from a professional designer in this entertaining workshop.

Many of Candice Wren's beautifully customised clothes have been for sale in the Shop @ FTM, but this is your opportunity to pick up some of her tips and ideas, and end up with a beautiful embellished, totally unique pashmina that you won't see anyone else with!

Pashminas will be supplied in a range of colours and prints and you will get the opportunity to customise them to reflect your own style.

Interior Design Workshop with Interiors Guru Daniel Hopwood

Saturday 8th May 2010

The 'Britain's Best Home' presenter will be leading a taster session ideal for anyone with a penchant for interior design.

The workshop with provide an overview of the priciples of interior design, with a particular focus on the importance of colour and mood. Under Daniel's expert guidance, participants will then be encouraged to create their own mood board to take home with them.

Participants should bring along a photograph and if possible a sketch plan of a room they want to decorate.

About the facilitator: Daniel Hopwood is a well known interior designer, workig internationally on both residential and commercial projects notable for their high level of bespoke luxury. He will also be familiar as the presenter of Channel 4's interior design show 'Britain's Best Homes'.

When: 8th May 2010. There is a choice of sessions, either 10am - 1pm, or 2pm - 5pm

Tantalising Textiles Workshop with Fiona Howard

Textile Printing Workshop with Designer Fiona Howard

Fiona Howard, creator of Sanderson's incredibly popular 'Dandelion Clocks' print, will show you the techniques needed to make your own fantastic textile print.

Fiona Howard has created some very well known textile designs including the incredibly popular Sanderson print 'Dandelion Clocks'.

This is a great opportunity to spend the day here at the Fashion and Textile Museum in the company of one of the UK's foremost textile designers, who will guide you through the key techniques that will help you produce your own special print.

Fiona will take participants through the process from research and demonstration to then drawing your own design, tracing it onto lino and then cutting and printing it. There is also the opportunity for the design you make to be printed onto Sanderson fabric and made up into a cushion cover.

Learn to Draw Like a Designer - Easter Holiday Workshops for Ages 10 - 16

This Easter holiday, we're hosting a pair of fun hands-on workshops for young people in the art of fashion design and illustration.

In this popular creative workshop, FTM curator Dennis Nothdruft will inspire budding illustrators and designers by helping to develop basic fashion illustration techniques.

Advanced Fashion Illustration

Ages 12 - 16

For those who want to take their fashion illustration to the next level, this workshop will explore more advanced techniques such as collage and painting techniques. Basic drawing skills are required to get he most out of this course.

The Wool Pack Knitting Club

Wednesdays starting 14th April 2010 6:30pm - 9pm

Work on your knitting project in a relaxed and sociable environment, with expert help as needed, and our Sanderson exhibition as an inspiring backdrop!

This six week course is for those who already have a sound understanding and practical abilty to knit/crochet basic stitches, cast on and off and would like to take those basic knitting/crochet skills to the next level.

Or, perhaps just enjoy knitting/crocheting in a friendly, enjoyable and relaxed environment with other who want to achieve the same thing.

During the six weeks you will work on your chosen project at your own pace in the class with an experienced teacher to help guide/assist you with any knitting/crochet issues you may have.

We Are Photogirls - Two Day Fashion Photography Workshop for Teenagers

Over two days - Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th April, 11am - 4pm

Immerse yourself in the world of fashion photography as you join We Are Photogirls to create a unique fashion shoot inspired by the Very Sanderson exhibition.

We Are Photogirls run fashion photography workshops and events for teenagers, teaching photography, styling, creative hair and make up design and art direction.

The first day will be focussed around designing and building unique pieces of clothing, props and accessories using the Sanderson exhibition for inspiration. Day 2 will be the photoshoot, including an introduction to basic camera skills and the different roles within fashion photography, story boarding followed by the shoot itself.

Pattern Cutting for Lycra - Talk and Demonstration with Pineapple

"Dancewear brand Pineapple kick-started the stretch revolution with the creation of cotton Lycra jersey; this is a rare opportunity to learn from the experts as Debbie Moore and her team take you through the basics."

Pineapple kick-started the stretch revolution with the creation of cotton Lycra jersey and was responsible for bringing dancewear from the studio to the street. Debbie Moore and Pineapple created such 'fashion firsts' as the cotton lycra LBD, footless tights and The Body.

However, designing and cutting clothes with this fabric is a great skill and this is a rare opportunity to learn from the experts as Debbie Moore and her team take you through the basics.

This fun and informal session will look at how the first patterns were generated, how to incorporate 3D shapes, positioning prints on stretch fabrics, key fits and sample blocks.

Knitting Needles at the Ready - The Woolpack Returns for 2010

Returning for 2010, six week knitting courses at beginner and intermediate levels

Our popular knitting club returns for the new year, this year with separate courses for beginners and more advanced knitters.

Beginners course - Tuesday evenings from 19th January

This new club at the FTM is aimed at those who have little or no knitting experience but who have always wanted to learn the lovely art of knitting. Taught in a relaxed environment you will learn the basic techniques and stitches required to knit. Once you have mastered the basics you will put them into practice on a class project which will mean you have a finished article at the end of the course.

Intermediate course - Wednesday evenings from 20th January

This course is ideal for those who have mastered basic knitting techniques and want to take their skills to the next level. Over the course of six weeks you will learn how to read and interpret basic commercial patterns through to creating your own simple designs, in a friendly and informal environment.

Both courses take place one evening a week for six weeks from 6.30 - 9pm. Needles and yarns are supplied for use in the first class. Participants will need to acquire their own needles and yarns for the following classes and projects.

Ceramics masterclass with Sally Tuffin


Wednesday 21st January 2010, 10am - 4pm

Sally Tuffin started using her creative skills outside the fashion arena in 1985 and has since been designing ceramics for internationally renowned Dennis Chinaworks.


This is a unique opportunity to join Sally Tuffin and her team of decorators, and under their expert guidance decorate your own spill vase, which will then get fired in the kilns at Dennis Chinaworks and the finished product sent to you within two weeks.

Embroidery workshop with Naomi Ryder

Renowned textile designer and illustrator Naomi returns to the FTM to run one of her popular embroidery workshops.

Learn how to customise your clothes and bring individuality to any item through different embroidery techniques from hand stitches to some freehand machine embroidery.

Embroider logos, days of the week, insects, people, flowers; from the skills you learn you will be able to decorate and take home your own items. All welcome.

Naomi Ryder is a textile designer and illustrator whose innovative work combines drawing and embroidery. She is much in demand with fashion designers and design companies.

A New Season of Fantastic Short Courses for Fashion Designers

Kaledo Print and Kaledo Style The Kaledo Print and Kaledo Style courses introduce Lectra's specialist software for fashion or textile design, and having taken a course you will be able to book use of the software at the Museum for a very modest fee, and to use it to develop your design work without having to purchase the software yourself. This software is really fantastic - come and try it through one of our courses.

Adobe InDesign Desktop Publishing
Our new Adobe InDesign Desktop Publishing course introduces this new software and will give you the skills to create high quality flyers, brochures, stationery and other promotional material for your business.

Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
Our courses have been developed to meet the specific needs of designers working in the fashion, textiles and jewellery sectors. Training in these Adobe applications is delivered in small groups with a focus on your particular learning requirements. Courses are available to help introduce you to these programs or to help build up your confidence and skills to a more advanced level.

All courses incorporate 15 hours tuition. Evening courses run for 6 weeks (6.30pm - 9pm). Weekend courses run for 4 weeks (10am - 2.15pm) with a 30 minute break. Intensive courses run over three consecutive days. Click on the information link next to each listing for full details.

All courses take place at the FTM near London Bridge in our recently refurbished Learning Suite, fully equipped with PCs running the most up-to-date software. Most courses come in a choice of timings, with availability on Saturdays, weekday evenings, and newly for 2010, as 3-day mid week intensive courses - so you should be able to find a time that suits.

Priced at just £100, we believe the training offers outstanding value for money compared to similar offerings elsewhere - and those claiming JSA can take one course, or several, completely free (eligibility criteria apply - contact us to find out more).
